The photographic work represented here is the synthesis of my background in photography and painting. Focus is the human figure embedded in natural, architectural, or sculptural imagery. Borrowing from Greco-Roman antiquity, a classical sculpture is juxtaposed next to a contemporary model.
The dialogue: the visual interplay between a momentary illusion, a chimera or a fantasy captures the fragile relationship of the past to the present and makes manifest the ephemeral qualities of beauty, pathos, romance, decay, denial and loss.
Our perceptions, our interactions between nature, culture and each other, are a guiding force in my art, especially as they relate to gender and sexuality. The work examines the classical notions of the objectified and contemplative feminine, as well as the heroic masculine.
Viewed together the work reads like a book of poetry with legends open for interpretation.
