Artist Statement

Russel Kwan

Photographs are the frozen fabric of time, or even the frozen fabric of dreams.

My photography and this book are deliberately designed to exist outside the realm of written and spoken language. My desire is to connect with you using the language of light, captured from time and space, both real and imagined.

I invite you to spend some time with these images and to seek out your own interpretations and patterns. I hope you will find the wordless common space we all share as visual language.

Wendy Kwan

"Art is not what expresses personality, but what overcomes it."    T.S. Eliot

My photographs originate from careful examination and discovery of all that surrounds us. I actively seek places where the combination of subject, light and circumstance entices me to photograph, but never know when or where such may present themselves.

My style of working relies on spontaneity and responsiveness, but is supported by a strong foundation of study and understanding of craft and equipment. Each photograph I create has completed a long and considered journey from field to darkroom to finished image.

I invite you to see my photographs using your individual perspective. Slip into the shadows, follow the lines, feel the textures, and find the hidden treasures. You are welcome to draw your own conclusions.
