Advanced Composition:

One Very Interesting Concept - Sequences

After the foundations of basic photographic composition have been mastered, it's fun and rewarding to explore advanced concepts of composition. This session focuses on a single concept: Sequences, and is just the thing to get those creative juices flowing.  This course explores the concept with hands-on experience creating sequences, as well as looking at historical and contemporary examples.

We will start by looking at a few sequences that have been photographed in the past, and talk about how they were created.  Muybridge's sequence of a galloping horse is prime example.  This will both put a historical context on the concept of Sequences, and show several different ways that photographers have approached this concept.

Then we will get our hands dirty (metaphorically!) and create some sequences in the studio (and perhaps outside - weather permitting) using both modern and old fashioned equipment.  We will talk about some other ways to create sequences that may require more time than we have (hours, days, weeks, months) - or that perhaps requires equipment we don't have available that day.

This course is appropriate for the intermediate photographer, and is most suitable for cameras with full manual controls.

Offered in conjunction with the Salt Spring Arts Council.
